Lithium cell balancing: When is enough, enough?

When designing, specifying, or purchasing a lithium based rechargeable battery pack, a question that should always come up is cell balancing as it relates to safety and long-life for the battery pack. A number of different types of balancing technologies are available, but precious little to actually identify when they should be used and how much cell balancing is really enough. Cell balancing, ultimately, needs to be matched to both the cells and to the way the cells are going to be used.
