Immersive telepresence: bringing reality to virtual reality

While the concept of virtual reality is exciting, the OR also provides an opportunity beyond the world of gaming, allowing engineers to realise their own 'real-life' applications. It opens up the possibility for "immersive telepresence", essentially, a video communications system and means of controlling it that simulates complete user-immersion within a remote location. Telepresence is a concept many are already familiar with but most people have only experienced it in the form of videoconferencing. While early adopters may have had poor experiences in terms of image and audio quality, the technology has matured significantly.
