Having learned that its technology might makes right, Microsoft Corp. is ready to roll out a PC security initiative that could have sweeping consequences for the security models of all networked systems. Some technologists outside the PC mainstream are already complaining about the architecture's shortcomings. The critics have valid points, but they do not appear to be addressing the core issue: Over the last decade, Microsoft has perfected a design-collaboration methodology that serves its need to step up to the technology challenges of the day. But it's a method that simultaneously extends Microsoft's reach beyond its Windows franchise and disenfranchises stakeholders outside the core PC domain.
