Researchers at Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs, Murray Hill, N.J., have developed the world's fastest digital signal processor (DSP) running at 1 V. The chip, which operates at 100 MHz, was made with equipment readily available in today's manufacturing facilities. Potentially, it could enable smaller and lighter cellular phones with extended battery life. The technology also could be instrumental in packet voice and data transport over wireless phones, higher-speed Internet surfing and video applications, and digital audio broadcasts.
