NAHB says copper wiring and other building materials in short supply

A recent survey of builders by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Washington, DC, said, "Shortages of materials are now more widespread than at any at any time since NAHB began tracking the issue in the 1990s, with more than 90% of builders reporting shortages of appliances, framing lumber and OSB (oriented strand board.)" More than 70% of respondents to the May 2021 survey for the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) also said there were either some shortages or serious shortages of windows and doors (87%); trusses (78%); copper wiring (77%); plumbing fixtures and fittings (75%); vinyl siding (74%); millwork (72%); gypsum wall board (70%); and lightweight steel for framing (70%). Other major building materials in short supply according to respondents included HVAC equipment (68%); hardwood flooring (67%); roofing materials (66%); cabinets (63%); structured insulated panels (62%); and insulation material (62%).
