Braced high voltage insulator assemblies for supporting transmission lines are a type of armless, or compact, line construction. Compacting overhead high voltage lines started in the United States with the introduction of porcelain transmissionclass horizontal line posts 50 years ago [1]. Compared with a conventional vertical string of suspension insulators mounted on a davit arm, a horizontal line post allows the use of a shorter pole and a reduction in the width of right-of-way required on that side of the pole by the distance t as depicted in Figure 1. The davit arm must be of sufficient length to allow the insulator string to swing in toward the structure under the maximum design transverse wind and still maintain the minimum required line-toground clearance d. Replacing the davit arm and free-swinging vertical insulator string with a rigid horizontal line post controls the position of the conductor at the attachment point and maintains the required clearance under all conditions. The required right-of-way width on that side of the structure is then reduced by the distance t.
