Due to difficult geological conditions and mechanically hostile environment, mining and trailing cables are frequently subjected to severe mechanical stressing, bending, flexing, twisting, being squeezed, kicked and pulled over sharp edges and rough surfaces more or less as a matter of course. Added to this comes the frequent stressing that results from environmental influences, together with hydrolysis, microbes, UV-radiation, high ambient temperatures and contact with fuels and lubricants. There remain the chances of accidental explosion and fire in the coal mines. Equally important is the protection of operators against electric shock. Broken cables can be led to the breakdown of entire systems and high costs are incurred through production stoppages and interruptions due to cables having to be repaired.
