Apparent energy (unit kVAh) based tariff is the only single parameter based tariff that is fair and incorporates an embedded power factor based discount mechanism. It can play a vital role particularly in the developing countries that are facing crisis of high losses and low degree of utilization (high degree of blocking) of transmission and distribution equipment due to highly inductive loads, loads injecting harmonics, and switching loads. It is a win-win solution where consumers can avail tariff discounts by becoming more efficient while electric utilities can increase its revenue both through loss reduction and throuqh the collection of penal charges from defaulting consumers.
