A polyphase system is broken up into singlephase systems similar in number to its phases and in each of these single-phase systems there is measured the active power or energy (W or Wh) and the reactive power or energy (VAR or VARh) and therefrom there is determined the apparent power or energy (VA or VAh) and these individual phase VA or VAh values are numerically added to obtain the total or polyphase VA or VAh. In Figs. 1 and 2 three cosine (Wh) and sine (VARh) meters 11, 12 and 13, 14 and 15, 16 in each phase conductor RST and having their voltage coils 2, 3 connected to artificial neutral O drive into ball-gear (VAh) measuring devices 18, 19, 20 and a counting train 21 continuously summing the individual VAh values indicates polyphase VAh consumed by load Z. The devices 18, 19, 20 are so constructed as to indicate positively for leading and lagging loads. The meters may be connected to the polyphase network by voltage and current transformers in which case the artificial neutral can be produced by the primary windings of the voltage transformers.
