Expect a flood of new Internet devices to take advantage of simple, low-cost networking. The lowest cost Internet appliances will be single-chip systems with integral networking software. Off-the-shelf, drop-in network modules exist to ready your product for the Web with minimal development costs. Even the lowly 8-bit processor can function as a complete Internet node. Semiconductor vendors will keep down the cost of networking software by giving it away to promote their processors.
