Many examples of the earliest surviving writing are related to administrative and economic tasks. Carved or inked markings on the earliest clay jars from Pakistan appear to indicate the contents and possibly the origin, destination, and ownership of the contained goods. Many of the earliest clay Sumerian tablets recorded govern-ment-administration and commerce transac-dons by means of a nu-merical system. These clay jars and tablets may represent some of the earliest examples of people who deliberately archived data, because they went through the extra processes of kilning or firing these jars, fixing the recorded information in place.
