Police have it. Firefighters do, too. Even municipal electric utility workers are exempt from the Department of Transportation's (DOT'S) "hours of service" rule. So, in the name of safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness―not to mention consistency―the utility industry has implored DOT to grant utilities the same exemption from the rule, which is designed to tighten the already tightly regulated hours that truck drivers (including utility crewmen who drive trucks) can spend working and driving.
