They're not quite old enough to enter the utility work force, but the next generation of researchers and engineers are testing their mettle in the Department of Energy's annual National Science Bowl, the country's largest science competition for middle and high school students. More than 21,500 students from 42 states plus the District ofrnColumbia and Puerto Rico began the competition in January.rnA kind of giant quiz show, it is the only academic competition of its kind sponsored by a federal agency. Contestants must show knowledge in all science disciplines, including chemistry, mathematics, and physics.
