I have a question about taper cutting in a Wire EDM. Some folks always cut the taper first and then cut the land. Others have told me it depends on the job whether they cut the land and then taper or the taper then the land. What's your take on this? - Jason Roger's reply: In most instances, cutting the draft first is the most productive approach. Once the taper is cut, trimming the land removes little material and goes quickly. If you cut the straight first and then trim the taper, you will be removing a lot more material and thus it will take longer. However, as with most things in EDM and in life, sometimes it all depends. For example, if you are cutting a die opening with a small draft angle (like 1/4 degree per side) and a narrow land that must be held absolutely evenly around the entire contour, you may well want to cut the straight first and "sneak up" on the land with your taper cuts. That way, you can make slight position adjustments, if necessary, to make the land absolutely uniform as well as keeping the land width exact.
