It took until the second issue of The Economist, published on September 2nd 1843. for the first letter to the editor to appear. A "plain, honest, intelligent Northumberland farmer" gave hearty endorsement to our opposition to Britain's protectionist Corn Laws. Though just one letter made it into print, we acknowledged that "Many letters have poured in upon us." And for 165 years letters to the editor have continued to pour in but limited space means that of the many sent few are chosen for publication.
