With its perpetual reannouncements and paranoid on-mes-sage discipline, in its early years in office New Labour had a grating propensity to carry on behaving like an opposition. At its last party conference before the general election, this old habit re-emerged. The fightback strategy outlined in Brighton this week combined two methods more typically associated with oppositions than with governments. One is to excoriate your adversaries wildly; the other is to emulate them.
