After a string of Latin American elec-tion victories for the left, Panama has bucked the trend. Ricardo Martinelli, a wealthy businessman running as a centrist independent, trounced the candidate of the governing centre-left Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), winning 60% of the vote in a presidential election on May 3rd. But his victory owed as much to local peculiarities as to new regional trends.
