In concluding that wealth "inequalities are likely to lessen now" because, among other reasons, "[thernpoor] will not be troubled by collapsing asset prices because they do not own assets" ("More or less equal?", April 4th), you fail to acknowledge the wisdom of that great champion of American free enterprise, Robert Heinlein: "People who go broke in a big way never miss any meals. It is the poor jerk who is shy a half slug who must tighten his belt". The poor will be more likely to have to forgo food, clothing, heating, health care, education and shelter, and will suffer greater damage to their health, children's future prospects and happiness.
