What a gloomy picture you paint of Britain's military commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan ("Losing their way?", January 31st). I should like to offer a different perspective. Let me start by saying that our armed forces are exceptional. They adapt to new environments with professionalism, intelligence and commitment, and have demonstrated this time and time again.rnIraq today-dramatically improved from the situation it was in a year ago-owes a huge debt to British forces. Although Operation Charge of the Knights in March last year got off to an inauspicious start, its eventual success and subsequent developments have transformed Basra. Yes, it was led and largely executed by the Iraqis, with coalition forces in support. That was always the intent, and indeed the point.
