None of the three Ecuadorean presidents elected between 1996 and 2004 finished their four-year terms. One was impeached for "mental incapacity", one fell to a military revolt and one was toppled by street protests. Two years ago Rafael Correa, who served in the illegitimate government that followed the 2005 protests and went on to be elected president in 2006, got through a new constitution that he promised would stabilise the country.
