LIKE the bloke in a bar who methodically i offers to buy each of the single women a drink, investment bankers are optimists at heart. Not any more. They are now almost universally despondent as the combined effect of new regulations, sluggish economies and skittish markets threaten swingeing cuts to their profits, their pay and, for many, their jobs.
