Bal Thackeray

The fight began in earnest in 1966, when Bal Thackeray and 17 others split a coconut at his family house by Shivaji Park, in Mumbai, to mark the birth of a political movement. His frail dad, hunched over his Marathi-language typewriter, conjured up a suitably martial name: Shiv Sena, the army of Shiva. They pledged to fight for the downtrodden Hindu indigenes of Maharashtra, the state that lies around the heaving financial hub of Mumbai.
