With hundreds of military lorries, menacing police vans, hovering heli copters and thousands of soldiers and riot police around, for much of the past week Moscow felt like an occupied city. The pur pose of this mobilisation was to defend the official result of the presidential election on March 4th that gave Vladimir Putin, out going prime minister, 64% of the vote.
