Jackie Cochran (above) was an extraordinary pilot at a time when aviation was still considered a man's world. She was born very, very poor in Florida, she struggled as a child and basically had nothing, but she worked at becoming a successful businesswoman and started making money. A lot of people thought she had the opportunities she did because later on she married a wealthy man, but regardless of that, Jackie had something special and she left a mark on aviation history that was all her own. She took less than three weeks to get her pilot's licence, and once she had it she broke record after record for speed and distance and altitude: in 1953 she became the first woman to break the sound barrier.
