I was surprised to see you describe New York state as a "place generally known for its freewheeling ways" in your article on its ban on mixed martial arts (mma) ("No holds barred", May 18th). New York city, after all, is the home of laws that prohibit smoking in outdoor parks and prescribe a ratio of male-to-female restrooms. mma's promoters may yet find a way in, but heaven help them if they hope to serve jumbo-sized sodas at the bouts.
