In 2012 America reported 14,827 cases of murder and manslaughter, two-thirds of which were carried out with guns. Thatis 4.7 homicides per 100,000 people; the lowest ratein over 50 years but far higher than in other rich countries. Canada sees 1.6 murders per 100,000; western European countries, just one.
