The Labour government - particularly in the two most recent parliaments - has orchestrated a campaign to reduce inequality between the private and public sectors by investing significant amounts in the provision of front-line public services. With more subdued consumer spending dampening the growth in private services activity since 2001, the expansion in public services has filled the void - particularly in terms of job creation -and the onset of recession has only increased the reliance on the public sector.
