Conditions in the major economies have deteriorated dramatically over recent weeks, with industrial output, orders, and exports going into freefall as consumer and investment demand have plunged. In the US, consumer spending dropped at an annual rate of almost 4% in Q3 with a further steep drop likely to have occurred in Q4. Indicators of consumption for the fourth quarter also look grim in many European countries and Japan.
