The labour market has decisively turned for the worse in recent months, with both the claimant count and ILO measures of unemployment reporting significant increases. The latest ILO data for the three months to August reported an increase in unemployment of 114,000 taking the unemployment rate to 8.1% (compared to 7.7% in the previous three months). Furthermore, the timelier claimant count (which refers to number of people seeking Jobseeker's allowance) has risen for seven successive months and as of September it was almost 140,000 higher than the beginning of the year.
