The ability of a region to innovate continuously and to reinvent itself following social, political, economic, and technological changes has fascinated human geographers, in general, and economic geographers, in particular, for decades. The story of the development of San Diego, as told in this book, is one example. San Diego developed from a location famed for its environment to a naval, aviation, life science, and knowledge-based center. According to the authors, this was not a natural path for development but required intervention by a partnership between civic leaders and the community.
