This is a fascinating book. It is also a very odd book, described as interdisciplinary but I'm inclined to say rambling. Despite that, though, it is a rewarding read. There are five chapters, preceded by a really interesting preface. This reveals, first, that the book was prompted by Jan Wallander, CEO and later chairman of Handelsbanken (a bank which, it is claimed, was "hailed as the safest bank in the world several times" [p. ix]. I do not know how that conclusion was reached, or indeed how it could be, but it is and has been for many years a bank of high reputation.) Apparently Wallander's attitude to subordinates and to leadership is summarised by the following quotation: "Oh, you have a different opinion? How interesting! Let us discuss!" (p. ix). I think the translation does not greatly help Wallander there, but the idea is clear. He had an open and enquiring mind. This book was prompted by a telephone call from Wallander to the author, who had for "many years" been a member of the group that advised Handelsbanken on applications for research grants. Wallander urged him to apply for a research grant to study banks. He did so, and this book is the outcome.
