The automotive industry is undergoing a revolution in wireless technology but security threats could cripple this burgeoning market before it takes off. Designers face the challenge of implementing new communications standards as high-speed networking finds its way into the vehicle. Accustomed to long development cycles, many are struggling to quickly equip new vehicles with the electronics that consumers are demanding. To mediate the time to market pressures and navigate a sea of emerging standards, designers are turning to FPGAs. Unfortunately, as the automotive industry rushes to deploy next-generation FPGA-based telematics systems, few designers fully understand the security implications of the FPGAs they select. Architecting secure networks begins with designing secure systems, and choosing the right components can have significant repercussions for the larger network, and associated subscription revenues.
