Today's cell phones, PDAs and other ultra-portables are becoming smaller and lighter-and more likely to adversely affect one another due to sheer numbers and proximity to other electronic devices. Twenty years ago, for example it would have been a rare occurrence to find a GPS receiver in close proximity to an implanted defibrillator. However, today, that scenario is not nearly as unlikely. EMI problems in ultra-portable applications usually fall into one of three categories: blatant EMI radiation that exceeds regulato- ry emission limits during product qualification (FCC, ETS EN); EMI that meets regulatory requirements but continues to adversely affect local devices; and EMI that adversely affects the ultra-portable device itself through harmonics and other spurious signals.
