The papers in this special section of Eastern European Economics originate from the fifth international conference on "Economic Challenges in Enlarged Europe," organized by the Tallinn School of Economics of Tallinn University of Technology in cooperation with the Society for the Study of Emerging Markets and the Bank of Estonia, held in Tallinn, Estonia, June 16-18,2013. The one theoretical and two empirical papers selected for this special section reflect the diversity of research on economic problems in the comparative perspective of advanced and transition economies in Europe.
