Comparative analysis of the tectonic development in the Uralian and Appalachian-Caledonian Phanerozoic fold belts, on the one hand, and the present-day Atlantic Ocean, on the other, and taking into consideration the material on the Central Asian and Mediterranean fold belts and the Pacific Ocean, makes it possible to reveal the most important regularities in the formation of Phanerozoic fold belts, as well as the role of the oceanic and continental lithosphere in this process. First, it should be noted that the development of fold belts at the early and late stages is determined by tectonic processes that are principally different in terms of both their manifestation and depths.
