Japan's duty free liquor industry has come under increasing pressure during the past two years, as domestic discount shops have cut their duty paid retail prices to a point where Japanese travelling overseas no longer consider it worthwhile to purchase duty free liquor, when they can buy the same item for almost the same price closer to home. Indeed domestic liquor discounting has affected tax free departure sales at Japan's international airports as well as sales on board Japanese airlines whose passengers are predominantly Japanese business and leisure travellers.
