PANAMAX SEGMENT TO LOSE ITS SHINE

The Panamax market is likely to sail in the dark on account of the negative outlook of thermal coal imports by India and China. In May, the Panamax charter rates were in free fall. The BPI fell below 900 points – its lowest since February 2017. A steep decline was also observed on coal routes. On the USG/Rotterdam route, spot rates fell by 21.5%, while on Indonesia-India, they declined by 18.7%. Similarly, on Cont- ECSA, trip rates were almost halved.
