摘要

Prof d'Angremond, who retired from the chair of Delft University of Technology's coastal engineering department in 2001 and is now a consultant, focused his keynote speech on the effects of accelerated mega-developments on people and environments, giving an overview of the world's biggest, most ambitious projects. He charted the evolution, in both size and technology, of developments such as the Sue/ and Panama Canals, which were completed in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries respectively, through Lake IJssel's closure and reclamation in Holland (1950s-60s), Singapore's Tuas and Changi reclamation projects (1980s), Hong Kong's Click Lap Kok island airport (1990s) and culminating in residence and leisure-based projects in the UAL (The Palms, The World), Oman (The Pearl), Bahrain and Qatar.
