Shipping industry bodies have welcomed the IMO's progress on making shippers verify container weights from 1 July 2016 to reduce accidents at sea, at ports, and on roads. The IMO's Maritime Safety Committee approved draft amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Chapter Ⅵ on 20 May and, as DPC went to press, was expected to adopt the changes in November 2014. Container weighing is a safety concern as data from insurers indicates a fifth of containers are overweight. This makes it hard for customs authorities to assess security risks and results in underpaid tariffs and duties. A circular has been published to help supply chain participants and SOLAS-contracting governments to implement the new requirement.
