30 years ago, a quiet fishing village on China's south coast was selected for an economic experiment that would transform it into a vast megalopolis. Walking through the city today, any reference to its previous life is overwhelmed by its population of 16 million, the density of high-rises, shopping malls, the greenery and the overwhelming tropical climate. Shenzhen's rapid urbanisation, together with an urgent need to re-examine and refresh the tired architecture biennial format, has informed this year's curatorial approach.
