FASHIONING FELT

Impregnated with resin in chairs by Gaetano Pesce, cut vertically and hung in the sculptures of Robert Morris, seamless in the uniforms created by artist Andrea Zittel, felt and its many versatile applications is the subject of the exhibition "Fashioning Felt", curated by Susan Brown at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York and showing until 7 September. Covering history, innovation and sustainability, the exhibition also looks at the present, in particular the last 15 years of great experimentation, manipulation and innovation, a period that has witnessed less conventional applications involving architecture, interiors and product design. An ancient material - said to be one of the first used for clothing - made by matting together wool fibres, felt is also the raw material in an installation created for the occasion by Dutch textile designer Claudy Jongstra, who has used wool from her own flock of sheep.
