WRIGHT COMES TO NEW YORK

Two prominent institutions - Columbia University and MoMA - have joined forces to bring the American master architect's immense archives to New York. The curators tell Domus about this ambitious project, on the occasion of the first exhibition based on the new collection When I received the proposal to transfer the entire Frank Lloyd Wright Archives to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, my first thought was that although MoMA doesn't usually collect architectural archives it already had a very famous one, that of Mies van der Rohe. The documents in architectural archives are of huge interest to many people, but the question was about how we were going to handle the FLW Archives. We needed to find a library where the materials could be made accessible and this led us to work with Columbia University's Avery Library. The opportunity of having the FLW and the Mies archives in the same place, along with the many archives on the history of New York collected by Avery, will put us in a position to start to cross-reference these different archives.
