This special Domus issue dedicated to sustainability represents an effort to take an in-depth and authoritative look at what in today's public opinion might be perceived as green and what in actual fact is to be considered ecological. For some years now, all types of industrial objects have been being produced under guidelines of sustainability, and in this supplement we have analysed the characteristics that make them beneficial. Recent scientific research has validated highly sustainable materials and techniques, some of which have become fashionable trends that are useful aids in protecting the environment. The results of this research shows that what really counts is the full life cycle of a product: the choice of raw materials, the type of energy used for its transformation and transport, and the energy needed to dispose of it when defunct. All these factors are expressed in the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere and in quantities of natural resources used throughout.
