In 1954, Editoriale Domus published the Antologia di edifici moderni in Milano ("Anthology of Modem Buildings in Milan"). This guide by Piero Bottoni applied a practical critique of the city, ushering in a formula that would soon flourish as an independent and successful literary genre. The publisher of Domus, Gianni Mazzocchi, described the book as a "supplement to our work and a contribution to a shared passion for the finest architecture", adding that the volume was printed with the intention of providing architects, intellectuals and the city's inhabitants with a "clue to what modern architecture is or is not".
