Landfill Gas Powers Coast Guard Yard

Environment News Service reported April 22, Earth Day, that the U.S. Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Md., opened its new Landfill Gas Renewable Energy Center at a "light-off" ceremony marking Earth Day 2009. "Light-off" is a maritime term indicating completion of the major mechanical and electrical systems of a ship, making it ready for sail; the light-off of the new energy center signifies that the Yard is ready to operate with renewable energy for the next 15 years.
