I was greatly put off by the unflattering tone of Tim Folger's article on Stephen Hawking ["Return of the Invisible Man," July/August, page 42]. I am not aware that Hawking's life aspiration is to secure a spot in the physics hall of fame, or that there need be such a thing-real or imagined. All contributions to science, whether of lasting or fleeting influence, have value. Visionary theorists like Hawking are rare and especially valuable to the progress of science, so I am unsure where he has gone astray. Only time can value Hawking's contributions. Help from Folger is not required.
