In 2014, Ole Gosau, Head of APU Services at Lufthansa Technikin Hamburg, was asked by his then boss to evaluate a piece of new technology from Vocollect, by Honeywell. Although well established in the logistics and retail industries, it was now trying to break into aerospace. Despite some initial scepticism, Gosau quickly found a potential application in his own unit with the Hamilton Sundstrand APS3200 APU. This is fitted to the Airbus A320 Family and is described by Gosau as the "bread and butter" APU, accounting for the highest throughput. The other models handled by APU Services arrive less frequently and as such, there are no current plans to convert to Vocollect. He presented his ideas to management and received approval to carry out a trial with assistance from Lufthansa Industry Solutions.
