The ATR 42 first entered service in December 1985, followed in October 1989 by its larger sister, the ATR 72. The company, now jointly owned by Airbus and Leonardo, will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2021. Last year, it achieved orders for around 80 aircraft, compared to 52 orders in 2018 and 113 in 2017. That included 35 from leasing company NAC (which also took 35 options and 35 purchase rights), a trend that has become apparent in recent years as the aircraft is seen as a good investment. That is partly because the aircraft has found a niche market.
