African-Americans experience higher rates of sev- eral chronic diseases, most notably diabetes hypertension, coronary heart disease, and stroke, with a substantial proportion of the increased risk being attributable to obesity (1,2). Despite an increased prevalence of obesity among African-Americans and its significant impact on the health of this population, rel- atively few genetic studies have been conducted in this racial group.
