The Girl Child in Beijing

The Fourth World Conference on Women (WCW) was held in Beijing, China, in September 1995. Among its many accomplishments was the recognition accorded to the special circumstances of the girl child. The WCW was the latest in a series of United Nations (UN) conferences on the situation of the world's women. Following the 1975 conference in Mexico City, 1976-1985 was declared the 'UN Decade for Women'. In 1980, the Copenhagen conference produced 'Programme of Action for the Second Half of the UN Decade for Women'. The 1985 Nairobi conference resulted in 'Forward-Looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women', a blueprint for action through to the year 2000.
